Traditional 3D printing constructs three-dimensional forms by vertically stacking two-dimensional layers. While the concept of layers has enabled standardized manufacturing, it also brings limitations in precision. In this series, we magnify this inaccuracy and transform it into a unique texture for the products.
As the print head moves in three-dimensional space, the extrusion of material resembles calligraphy, with varying speeds and pressures. Abstract strokes outline specific characters, and the solidified mechanical movement creates the field for the utensils to rest.
Technique
With the aid of parametric design tools, we re-programmed the operating instructions of the 3D printer — G-code — allowing the print head to break free from the conventional layer-by-layer planar path and travel through space in a non-planar manner, creating fluid and dynamic textures.
We spent a significant amount of time fine-tuning printing parameters and testing materials to ensure that the inherently uncontrollable nature of non-planar printing became manageable. It felt like artisanal craftsmanship, but achieved through digital precision.
