In collaboration with New York-based Kintsugi artist makomako, we explored how traditional lacquer techniques could transform the material expression of 3D printing.

Two pieces from our Uneven Chopstick Rest series were finished with natural lacquer: one using pigmented lacquer and copper powder, and the other with a traditional wiping technique. Made from wood-filled PLA, the printed forms already feature a subtle grain and layered texture. The lacquer enhances their depth, tactility, and sheen, replacing the familiar plastic appearance with a finish reminiscent of wood and traditional lacquerware.

The result combines digital fabrication with a centuries-old craft, creating objects that feel both materially familiar and formally contemporary.
